The Edina Health Department began operating in 1960 with a part-time Health Inspector. By 1962, the position became a full-time job and in 1965, Edina, Bloomington and St. Louis Park began jointly operating a public health laboratory to provide laboratory support for the three communities. The laboratory operated in the Edina Public Works Building, 5146 Eden Ave., until January 2002.

The Health Department inspects 120 Licensed food establishments, 79 Licensed swimming pools and 24 Licensed underground parking garages; and investigates (in a typical year) 80 reports of refuse accumulation, 3 reports of unwanted noise, 16 reports of improper outdoor storage, 9 food-borne illness reports and 18 housing maintenance complaints.

In addition, the Health Department responds to concerns about the Minnesota Clean Indoor Air Act, licenses registered Housing with Services facilities, licenses 195 vending machines, issues 26 itinerate (short-term) food licenses, issues 32 tobacco licenses and administers the Public Health Nursing Contract.

The public health nursing contract provides home health visits, maternal and child health services, women infant and child nutritional services, child and youth clinic services, disease prevention and control services and health promotion services. The contract for these services is through Bloomington Public Health Nursing.

Health Department staff has been trained in bioterrorism response and the Department participates in the Health Alert Network, linking Edina to state and federal public health resources.

The Department stands ready to address public health threats ranging from food illness outbreaks to bioterrorism and disease pandemics. Residents of the City can expect the resources of local, state and federal agencies in responding to these threats to the publics’ health.

Working hand-in-hand with the Health Department is the Recycling Department, which oversees garbage and recycling pickup in the City.
